What is history of necromancy and/or spiritism?
Necromancy is the act of conjuring the dead for divination. It dates back to Old
Testament times - to Persia, Greece and Rome, and in the Middle Ages was widely
practiced by magicians, sorcerers, and witches. It was condemned by the Catholic
Church as "the agency of evil spirits," and in Elizabethan England was outlawed
by the Witchcraft Act of 1604.
Today, popular TV shows featuring necromancy are becoming more numerous. People
rightfully want to know how their loved ones are faring in the afterlife. They
are seeking information and in some cases, forgiveness, from the dearly departed.
Is that such a bad thing?

Of course it isnt. We are human. We have all manner of emotions sewn up in our
human frame the frame that was created by God. We want to know that the people
that have gone before us are in a good place, and that we will see them again.
But for the Judeo and/or Christian walk, this path should be avoided. As an
example, in the New Testament, we have an account of the rich man and the beggar
Lazarus. The rich man is now in hell and Lazarus is with Abraham. The rich man
begs Abraham to send Lazarus back from the dead to warn his five brothers about
what fate could befall them. Abraham responds to this request with this answer:
Luke 16 v29
But Abraham said, "They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.'
30 But he said, "No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead,
they will repent!'
31 "But he said to him, "If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they
will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.''
In other words, they have the testimony of the Word of God, but they dont
believe it. That is to be enough for the believer.
In many places throughout the Old Testament people are warned of the danger of
consulting mediums( defined as a person thought to have the power to communicate
with the spirits of the dead or with agents of another world or dimension) or
spiritists to obtain truth. In Isaiah 8:19-20:
19 And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits,
and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their
God? for the living to the dead?
20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it
is because there is no light in them.
Many deceivers today say that their power is a gift from God. But what does God
say? In Deuteronomy 18:9-14 He says:
9 When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou
shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.
10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his
daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of
times, or an enchanter, or a witch.
11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a
necromancer.
12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of
these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.
13 Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God.
If an Israelite lived the deceitful practice of being a medium, it was
punishable by death death by stoning, no less as presented in Leviticus
20:27:
27 A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall
surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood shall be
upon them.
God seems to be pretty serious about this.
Spend anytime at all flipping through the afternoon talk shows and you will be
sure to stumble upon someone who can receive messages from people who have
crossed over. They do attribute their capability to God. It doesnt make sense
that a practice that God condemns and gives the penalty of death, should be a
gift from God. It is, however, a sign of the times, according to 1 Timothy 4:1:
The Spirit speaks expressly that in the latter times some shall depart from the
faith giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in
hypocrisy, having their consciences seared with a hot iron
